The best expense tracker for the UAE: what to look for

Most budgeting apps are built for the US or UK. Here's what actually matters if you earn and spend in dirhams.

1. It reads UAE bank messages

Banks in the UAE send a text for almost every card purchase. An expense tracker that turns those texts into expenses saves you typing every single purchase. Check that it understands the formats used by your bank, including amounts with "AED" before or after the number, and Arabic messages.

2. No bank login

Many international apps want to connect to your bank account, and most UAE banks aren't supported. Reading the purchase alerts on your phone works with every bank and never needs your password.

3. Budgets that follow your salary date

Salaries in the UAE often land on a fixed date, like the 25th or 28th. A budget that resets on the 1st splits your real month in two. Look for payday-based budgets.

4. Rent the way it's really paid

Rent is often paid yearly by one, two, four or six cheques. A good planner lets you enter rent that way and spreads it across the months, so your monthly budget is realistic.

5. Arabic and English

Full Arabic with a right-to-left layout matters if you or your family prefer it.
