1. Name the goal and the date
"Save more" doesn't work. "A trip to Japan in June, 9,000" does. A name and a date turn saving into a monthly number.
2. Save first, spend the rest
Divide the goal by the months left. Set that amount aside on payday, before anything else. What remains is your spending money, and it's all yours.
3. Turn spending money into a daily number
Divide your spending money by the days until payday. As long as you stay within today's number, the goal is safe. No guilt, no spreadsheets.
4. Find the leak
Most people have one category that quietly takes more than they think: food delivery, shopping, taxis. Look at last month and pick one. Set a limit 10 to 20% lower and see if you can keep it for four weeks.
5. Make tracking automatic
Plans fail when the tracking stops. Let your bank alerts do it: Expensly on the App Store logs purchases for you, keeps your goal safe in the daily number and shows your progress every day.
